When there are waves in Barcelona (spoiler: more often than you think)
The Mediterranean isn’t flat, it’s punctual: it has its season, its llevants and its windows. Here is the honest calendar, month by month.
We get asked this every week, so here is the short answer with no beating about the bush: Barcelona DOES have waves, but they keep their own diary. The strong season runs from October to March, summer is for learning and for plan B, and whoever understands the calendar stops "having bad luck" with the sea.
The year of a Barcelona surfer, month by month
| Time of year | What the sea does | Our plan |
|---|---|---|
| October and November | The jewel in the crown: Mediterranean lows wake up and the llevants leave the best days of the year, with the water still mild. | Surf flat out: weeks with 2-4 good days. This is when the wave alert works overtime. |
| December to February | Storms further apart but serious, a sea groomed by the terral and half-empty beaches. Water at 13-15 °C. | Surf in a 4/3 and a winter grin. On the days with no sea: surfskate and training, to arrive sharp for the next storm. |
| March to May | The lottery: winter’s last kicks mixed with spring calms. Good windows you have to catch on the wing. | Forecast checked daily and total flexibility: we publish surf as soon as a window shows up. |
| June to September | The realm of the thermal garbinada (the afternoon garbí breeze): soft, friendly little afternoon waves, plus the odd gift if a storm breaks the routine. | The best time to learn to surf (a kind sea and warm water) and, for the rest of the tribe: sunrise SUP, surfskate, swimming. |
How many surfable days are there really?
Being honest, because that is what our coast deserves: in high season (Oct-Mar) you get an average of one to two good windows a week, with glorious runs and flat weeks. In summer, a handful of surfable afternoons a month plus the odd surprise. The yearly total is plenty to make real progress… as long as you don’t miss the windows. That’s the trick: it isn’t about surfing more hours, it’s about being in the water at the right hours.
How not to miss a single window
- Sign up for the wave alert (just below): when the forecast looks good and we put surf on the calendar, you get an email. Zero noise the rest of the time.
- Learn to read the forecast with our guide: 10 minutes that are worth a whole season.
- Keep plan B on autopilot: with the flexible monthly course you choose the activity every week: surf when there is sea, SUP/surfskate/training when there isn’t. The sea decides, you never stop.
Frequently asked questions
Can you surf in Barcelona in summer?
Yes, but with patience and flexibility: summer lives off thermal garbinadas in the afternoon and the odd isolated surprise. They are small, soft waves, perfect for learning. On the completely flat days the plan is paddle surf, surfskate or training; that is why our subscription lets you choose the activity every week.
Which is the best month to surf in Barcelona?
October to March is the real season, with the autumn llevants as the main course: October and November usually leave the best days of the year. January and February add storms with cold water; with a 4/3 wetsuit you surf beautifully and with half the crowd.
What wetsuit do I need at each time of year?
From June to September, board shorts or a shorty (water at 22-27 °C). October-November and May, a 3/2. From December to April, a 4/3 and, if you feel the cold, booties. The Mediterranean cools down later and warms up later than people think.
